FoodThere are many Jewish foods. ![]() One food is bagels. Jewish people eat bagels on many occasions. We put many things on them including lox (salmon), cream cheese, and basically anything that tastes good. As you can see in the picture above, Jewish children bring them to school for snacks and lunch. One is matzah. Matzah originated when Moses was taking the Jewish people out of Egypt. The Jewish people had to leave in a hurry and they didn't have time for their bread to rise. So, they took the unleavened bread. That unleavened bread is now called matzah. From matza we make matzah ball soup. Matzah ball soup has matzah balls in chicken broth. Our main bread is called Challah. We eat Challah on many occasions, from a normal meal to holidays. But, we don't eat it on Passover because the Jewish people couldn't make leavened bread when they were escaping from Egypt. On Passover we have a Seder plate. The Seder plate has Haroseth, roated egg, shank bone, bitter herbs, and parsley (dipped in salt water). These five things remind us of different things that we had to face in Egypt. The Haroseth reminds us of the marter that we rubbed between the brick to make pyramids. The roasted egg reminds us of newborn. The shank bone reminds us of our sacrifices. The bitter herbs remind us of bitter times. The parsley dipped in salt water reminds us of our tears. On Chanukah we eat latkes. Latkes are potato pancakes. There are many differetn ways to make them, but all taste great! Many non-Jews enjoy latkes and when they think of Jewish food, they think of latkes. |
